The Cancer Prevention Report Pūrongo Ārai Mate Pukupuku
Cancer is the leading cause of health loss in Aotearoa New Zealand with about 25,000 people diagnosed every year. Cancer is a complex condition, and it is not possible to predict who will develop cancer and who will not. This report focuses on what actions Aotearoa can take to stop cancers developing whenever possible.

Disability and cancer reports

We worked with Lived Experience Advisors Amr, Dairne and Wendi, Hei Āhuru Mōwai Māori Cancer Leadership Network, He Ara Tanagata – the Agency's Consumer Advisory Group, Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People, Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora, and the Ministry of Health – Manatū Hauora to review the available data, evidence and insights available on how disabled people experience cancer services and care. The information has been collated in two reports which the Agency released on 27 November 2025. This is the first time this type of research has been carried out in Aotearoa New Zealand. It highlights the:

  • need to maintain a continued focus on providing accessible, inclusive, and equity-focused cancer services
  • importance of having robust data, collaboration, and co-design of health services with disabled communities

You can read both reports, frequently asked questions on the report web page.

Optimal Cancer Care Pathways

On 22 July 2025, we published 16 Optimal Cancer Care Pathways (OCCPs) for eight solid tumours and eight blood cancers that affect people in Aotearoa New Zealand. The OCCPs are pathways that describe contemporary best practice for the delivery of optimal cancer care by tumour type. Each OCCP has been designed in partnership with the sector:

  • with the needs of the person and their whānau (family) at the heart
  • to reflect the best service capabilities available in New Zealand
  • to provide a national expectation of equitable, high-quality, timely, and evidence-based cancer prevention and care for all New Zealanders.

The OCCPs include a:

  • Principles document which outlines the eight principles on which each OCCP is built
  • Supplementary Information document which includes additional information on: achieving Pae Ora; equity and whānau insights; Person/ Whānau questions; definitions; tumour volumes; OCCP tumour references and bibliographies
  • Pathway document relating to a specific type of cancer.
