Our structure
To mātou hanga We are a departmental agency reporting directly to the Minister of Health and hosted by the Ministry of Health. The Agency was set up in recognition of the impact cancer has on the lives of New Zealanders to provide a focus on this important health issue. We take a whole-of-systems focus on preventing and managing cancer, including overseeing system-wide prioritisation and coordination of cancer care to improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. We are also guided by the refreshed New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2026–2029. This plan builds on investments and progress made since the release of the 2019–2029 Plan (available on the Ministry of Health website), while reflecting changes in cancer treatments and the health system.
The underpinning principles relating to Governance of the Agency are:
- Commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi
- Equity led
- Participation
- Transparency of decisions
- Clear accountability
